The EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) introduces mandatory cybersecurity requirements for products with digital elements sold in the EU, including connected hardware, software, and network-enabled devices.
The regulation applies to manufacturers, importers, and distributors and requires addressing cybersecurity tthroughout the product lifecycle—from secure design and development to vulnerability management and end-of-support.
What the CRA Means for Connected Sensing
Connected sensing and telemetry solutions are becoming increasingly important across industrial and commercial applications. As these systems become more connected, cybersecurity needs to be considered alongside reliability,
performance and functionality.
For connected sensor products, this can include secure product architecture, protected data transmission, vulnerability management, security updates, incident reporting and clear customer information. Where sensors form part of a wider connected solution, such as mobile applications, gateways or remote monitoring platforms, cybersecurity also needs to be considered across the wider system.
The CRA strengthens the importance of security by design — considering cybersecurity from the outset and throughout the product lifecycle, rather than treating it as an additional feature at the end of development.
